Did you know? - How to avoid pilonidal cysts

During World War II, pilonidal cysts had been a common condition amongst members of the US Army. Soldiers often riding in jeeps were especially affected. Long rides on bumpy roads seemed to encourage the disease. This is why pilonidal cysts were also referred to as "Jeep riders' disease" back then.

Indeed, sitting for a long period of time is one of the factors contributing to the development of pilonidal cysts, especially in combination with tight underwear, sweating, and excessive body hair. When heavy shaking is added, for example during rides in a jeep, pressure is put on the coccyx, which further increases the risk for the development of pilonidal cysts.
